Driving trainers are a sure means of taking your ego down to size. you can have twenty years of experience behind your belt, but you are not going to need it on your side. You are dismembered in bits in your driving. Mirror checks. Speed control. Road positioning. Among the questions that a trainer can ask is the following: Why did you slack there? If you shrug, that’s a problem. Everything must be a conscious and logical action.

At a higher level, there is sharp practice. You start seeing trouble ahead. A car edging out too far. A man is walking holding phone in his hand. A slightly wobbling cyclist. The road itself no longer is arbitrary, but it starts to make sense. You do not just react and start before the potential dangers happen.

Then there is the most difficult one which is teaching.

It will be no long time before you find that there is a great distinction between knowing and explaining. Trying to describe your three-pedal virgin clutch. Misinterpretation is brought out immediately. The exercises which force you to keep it simple: “Lift slowly. Pause. Feel the car move.” Clear instructions are superior to intelligent speech.

Timing is critical. Give orders too early and they pass away. It is late and you are taking the two-brake off. “Mirrors. Signal. Slow.” Much may be said in three brief words.

Role-play games are strange at the beginning. Adults pretending to be stalling or panicking at the crossroads. But these movements show didactic practices. Some trainees talk nonstop. Others go silent. Balance is key. At one stage, one of the mentors informed me that the voice sends the car hot or cold. Calmness spreads. So does tension.

Psychology matters. Terrible pupils are clinging to the wheel as a lifeboat. Self-centered and they run over lanes blindly. You alternate the tone, the pace, and instructions. Breathing, body language and posture are natural.

Risk awareness training is difficult. The deconstruction of real-life events and split-second decisions are addressed and it is learned that even minor errors can get out of control. and that is not that consciousness that you forget–but that changes your driving–and your instruction.

Exams are thorough. Traffic law and hazard perception theory tests exist. Tact and foresight are subjected to practical test. Instructional tests test your abilities on how to guide the student without frustrating him/her. Stress shows weakness–and gains power.

Business skills matter too. There is the need to organize courses and cancelations as well as affordable costs. The rate of spreading reputation through word of mouth is high and in the business world, it is the professionalism that counts on a day to day basis.

Progress comes gradually. Early lessons feel awkward. Words trip over each other. You are a straight shooter, less talk, less action. Silence becomes powerful. Students read, think and improve.

The trainees had to almost give up after one of them had experienced a frustrating moment when her student was held up at a busy roundabout. Several months after, she managed the same situation in a composed and assured manner. Same road. Different mindset.

The driving instructors in training develop their patience, restraint and composure. You allow safe mistakes. You lead without imposing. And when a child does well the pride is rewarded. The competencies acquired at the left seat extend far beyond the steering wheel.
